Hello. My name is Jenna Lou Gorko.
I'm a senior psychology major here at Canisius College.
I also minor in philosophy and theology because I enjoy the subjects and believe it is important to get a broad education about the various beliefs and theories an individual may hold to be true if you want to help them.
I work in the psychology department under the supervision of the professors here. I aid in research and clerical work as well as organize this wiki page, the Can Psych Facebook Page and the Twitter Account.
I'm extremely passionate about the To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA) movement and fostering hope where people feel hopeless. To Write Love On Her Arms is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with various mental health issues including depression, addiction, anxiety, self-injury, eating disorders and suicidal behavior. I recently launched a TWLOHA UChapter at Canisius to embody the mission and vision of the movement and help develop a sharing community here on campus.
I hope to go to grad school next year to get my MSW and LMHC and become a clinical counselor for those struggling with depression, anxiety, self-injury and suicidal thoughts.
This fall I will begin my Clinical/Counseling practicum under the supervision of Professor Akin.
I have decided to go an unorthodox route and registered to become a volunteer responder at IMAlive.org for my practicum. It is an online program founded by TWLOHA, the National Hopeline Network and PostSecret in which, following certification, I respond to messages from people in crisis.
We'll see where it goes :)
