SPECIAL FRIENDS PROGRAM

CHILD ASSOCIATE
(Para-Professional)

                Entry Requirements and Mandatory components:
                Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and must submit the following
                  items prior to the interview:
                  
                      1)        A completed application including (3) references
2)        A resume
3)        A letter of intent explaining why you are interested in becoming a Child
                      Associate.
    
    Child Associates are selected based on completion of the above stated items
    along with an evaluation of your interpersonal skills and desire to work with
    children. Applicants are also subject to a thorough screening process including
    reference and police background checks.
    
    *Take part in the program for the entire academic year
    *Partake in an interview with Program Coordinator
    *Complete Participation in Child Associate Training held in the fall
    *Attendance at monthly in-service instructional workshops
    *Participation in Special Friends Goals and Progress Conferences
    *Maintain a weekly journal documenting your interactions with the students
    *Maintain regular correspondence with Coordinator and Site Supervisors
    
    Your role as a Child Associate
    *Child Associates are typically assigned to work in one elementary school
    and will be assigned to work individually with 5-7 students, meeting for one-half hour
    on a weekly basis from October through early May.
    
                      1)        To develop a positive, nurturing, relationship with referred children to reduce their dysfunctional behavior in the classroom and elsewhere, and to improve their behavior,
educational performance and social relationships.

2)        Uses conversation, creative play materials, games, academic coaching and other
approaches referred to during training and in your manual to achieve prescribed
goals with individual children.

3)        Converses with children and establishes an atmosphere to encourage their
                      expression of feelings and ideas. Deals effectively and constructively with such
    feelings and ideas.
    
                      4)        Helps to build confidence and self-esteem in children through one-to-one
