Psychology Department faculty are actively seeking your help in their research. Read below for more information about how you can be actively involved in data collection, analysis, and the generation of cutting edge psychological research across a variety of domains. Please contact the faculty member listed for the study for details about how to get involved in the project or projects you would like to study.
**Narrative psychology** ([[lodismij@canisius.edu Dr.Lodi-Smith]]). Narratives are the stories individuals tell about their lives as a whole or about specific, meaningful events in their lives. Individual differences in how people tell their stories can be coded from these narratives and this information used to predict important life outcomes. People working on this project will engage in two primary activities. First, they will read journal articles for information relevant to a review article addressing how individual differences in narrative style predict important life outcomes above and beyond traditional predictors of these outcomes - a great way to get familiar with some of the important narrative literature! Second, individuals working on this project will read actual narratives including life stories to stories of personality change to narratives of religious identity development. These narratives come from a range of people age 18 - 89 and some come from the same person at three different time points. Each will be coded for important narrative constructs and used to develop some new coding protocols.
**The study of study abroad** ([[lodismij@canisius.edu Dr.Lodi-Smith]]). In its preliminary stages of development. Will study identity development during the study abroad experience first in an undergraduate population and then put an effort forward at the university level to get alums back to do semester abroad and study identity development across adulthood as a result of study abroad. May also integrate a variety of campus ministry immersion experiences.
**Cognitive aging and personality** ([[lodismij@canisius.edu Dr.Lodi-Smith]]). A review article looking at the relationship between personality traits and cognitive functioning after age 60. People working on this project will read articles, pull out information pertaining to the review, and help with the analysis and write-up of the review.
**Self-concept clarity over time across the lifespan** ([[lodismij@canisius.edu Dr.Lodi-Smith]]). Uses structural equation modeling to look at the patterns, influences, and outcomes of the development of self-concept clarity (how certain you are of who you are) across the lifespan over time. Would be a great project for people who have taken advanced stats and would like to build their knowledge of how to statistically analyze longitudinal data.

**Narrative psychology** (Dr. Lodi-Smith). Narratives are the stories individuals tell about their lives as a whole or about specific, meaningful events in their lives. Individual differences in how people tell their stories can be coded from these narratives and this information used to predict important life outcomes. There is a lot going on in the narrative side of my work right now. It has been largely neglected over the past few years because of time and resources. Now I have both and am very excited to get back to what has always been my true passion in personality research. Within the narrative work, there are actually three sub-projects that go well together. The first is a review article I am writing that looks at how individual differences in narrative style predict important life outcomes above and beyond traditional predictors of these outcomes. People working on this will read journal articles and code them for relevant information for the review article - a great way to get familiar with some of the important narrative literature! The second part of the narrative work in the lab is working with actual narratives. I have around 500 2.5 hour long life story interviews from approximately 200 individuals age 18 - 89. Many of these are from the same person at three time points. People working on this part of the project will be coding these for important narrative constructs as well as using them to develop some new coding protocols. This may be a little slow to start as the narratives will be coming from Illinois and need to be transcribed. Where that transcription will happen and when the actual narratives get here is still up in the air. In the meantime, for a number of years, I have been slowly working on a project of religious identity narratives. I will need some help reworking a website to collect more of these narratives, getting people to provide these narratives, and the coding and analyzing of the data. A good, more short-term project. Over the course of the semester, I'll be writing a grant to get this entire line of research funded and will periodically ask for your feedback and help on drafts of the grant.
Project 2: The study of study abroad. I am working with the study abroad office to set up a study of the study abroad experience. I will be meeting with them on 8/25 to brainstorm and discuss the basics but the general idea is to study identity development during the study abroad experience first in an undergraduate population and then put an effort forward at the university level to get alums back to do semester abroad and study identity development across adulthood as a result of study abroad. Hoping this will be a hit with the administration and, if so, to apply for funding for this project in the spring while collecting pilot data. More to come!
Project 3: Cognitive aging and personality. I am currently working on a review article looking at the relationship between personality traits and cognitive functioning. Need some people interested in this topic to read articles, pull out information pertaining to the review, and help with the analysis and write-up when the time comes.
Project 4: Self-concept clarity over time across the lifespan. Someone who has taken advanced stats could help with this one. Using structural equation modeling to look at the patterns, influences, and outcomes of the development of self-concept clarity (how certain you are of who you are) across the lifespan over time.
So those are my big projects for the semester. Hopefully you can all find some things to excite you in those ideas and come up with some ideas of your own you might like to explore.
See you on 8/31 at 3pm and I'm happy to set up a time to meet with you earlier if you are in the area before then and want to catch up. If you are no longer interested in the lab, let me know and I'll take you off this email list.
